The colder seasons are coming. Fall is crisp and fresh and mild, and represents a great way to cool off from the heat of summer. We don’t need heavy clothing yet, and it’s the perfect season for outdoor exercise. For these reasons, fall is the favorite season of a great number of people. For retailers, it’s a time of intense preparation. Holiday sales are nearby, and early fall advertisement cycles are imperative to later performance. Low sales during the early months of fall can break a business easily.

Of course, not everyone feels the same way about the coming season. Poets in particular have painted a very somber, melancholy picture of autumn. Dreams of summer are passing, and for some the possibilities that once existed are gone. A cold winter is ahead, and for many it’s an unfortunate reminder of another year gone by. Many are left unhappy or unfulfilled, and so they fall into seasonal depression.

The season is a boon to the tourism industry, as people from warmer climates generally enjoy traveling to see the changing color of the leaves, or enjoy apple cider and cider donuts, which often cannot be found in other parts of the country. Historically, fall is associated with the harvest, which could also have an enormous impact on the mindset of a particular society many hundreds of years ago, before food and sustenance was plentiful in developing countries. We’re better off now, of course, and so we don’t dread the coming season quite so much.

The weather of course is colder, and precipitation can pack quite a punch. There’s nothing better than a cup of hot cocoa in fall, or cuddling with a loved one under the warmth of an electric blanket on a cool fall night. Some might consider smaller, more portable heaters in order to heat individual rooms instead of the entire house. Saving on a fall or winter electric bill is a great feeling for anyone struggling.

What will you do this fall? Will you get outdoors, go hiking, or travel? Will you spend time with the family? Will you enjoy time away from the kids as they go back to school? Fall presents so many options that summer does not, especially for families. Back to school sales are calming down, but holiday sales are right around the corner, and a lot of us will be planning our purchases or even beginning our holiday shopping. No matter what we do, we should remember to stop and look up! The beauty of fall is incontrovertible.
